Frequently Asked Questions - FREESTYLE LIBRE 2

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system is approved by the FDA and the sensors used by the FreeStyle Libre 2 system are highly accurate within their 14-day lifespan.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system has been designated as an iCGM by the FDA, meaning it can communicate digitally with other devices. It has also been approved for use by children starting at the age of four.

If you encounter error messages while using the FreeStyle Libre 2 system, consult your user’s manual for more information.

If this happens to you, contact Abbott (the manufacturer of these CGM systems) here for a free replacement. Abbott’s customer service department is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern on all days except holidays.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 app for iOS and Android devices have completed FDA review and is available to the public via download from your mobile device's store. The two apps are FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre Link app. Visit the site for more information and app downloads. The system can also be used with a standalone reader.

Wash the area with soap and water and shave the area completely. Whether you're applying the sensor to your stomach or arm, it’s important to have clean, dry, smooth skin.

  1. Use the alcohol wipes provided and let it air dry completely.
  2. If you’re susceptible to skin irritation, pretreat the area with an adhesive barrier, like Skin Tac.
  3. Cover the sensor with a CGM patch or slick, like this one.
  4. Wait at least one hour before getting the sensor wet. This will give your adhesives a better chance to adhere to your skin.

Getting started with the FreeStyle Libre 2 system should be a breeze! Just follow the sensor application guide  and any documentation that comes with the system.

While you can buy the FreeStyle Libre 2 at pharmacies, you cannot purchase this system over the counter. Instead, you’ll need a prescription before you can buy it from US MED or anywhere else.

US MED® sells replacement sensor kits for the FreeStyle Libre 2. Each of these kits contains a single sensor.

To continue using your FreeStyle Libre 2 system indefinitely, you’ll need access to a steady supply of sensors. Since this device has a sensor lifespan of 14 days, make sure your insurance will cover the cost of two sensors each month (or that you can afford this expense out of pocket).

No, the small needle inserts a tiny cannula that sits below the skin and stays in the interstitial fluid which is used to read blood sugar levels.

Yes, US MED® accepts Medicare nationwide. The FreeStyle Libre 2 CGM falls under DME and coverage is a part of Medicare Part B. If you meet the requirements of treating diabetes with insulin or having a documented case of level-2 hypoglycemia, then Medicare will cover 80% of your out-of-pocket costs*, after the deductible is met.
